ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – In a field of 40 teams and 436 runners, the No. 18 Washington University in St. Louis men's cross country team finished fifth in the Gold 8k on Saturday afternoon at the Augustana Interregional Invitational. In the Blue 8k race, the Bears moved up a spot, finishing fourth among 30 teams competing and 407 runners.
In the Gold race, No. 2 Wartburg claimed the team trophy with 41 points. No. 5 North Central was second with 144 points while No. 4 Wisconsin-Whitewater was third with 160 points. No. 27 Wisconsin-Eau Claire had the fourth fewest points (166) while WashU rounded out the top five with 182 points.
Graduate Cullen Capuano was the top Bear finisher in third place with a time of 24:04.6. Senior Matthew Hornung was the next to cross the finish line for WashU in a time of 24:43.1 in 20th place. The next three Bears all finished within just over two seconds of each other. Senior Alexander Gadin was 57th in a time of 25:25.6. Graduate Jack Maranz was two spots behind in 59th place wit a time of 25:26.5; immediately followed by first-year Ilan Sherman-Kadish in 60th place with a time of 25:27.2.
In the Blue 8k race, WashU improved one spot with its fourth place finish among the 30 teams. No. 2 Wartburg (21) and No. 5 North Central (65) were the top two team finishers with Wisconsin-Stevens Point (97) in third. The Bears finished with 158 points, two points ahead of No. 4 Wisconsin-Whitewater's 160 points in fifth.
Senior Jamie Olson was the top WashU finisher in 24th place with a time of 26:20.3. Junior James Corbett was next for the Bears in 32nd place with a time of 26:29.5. Junior Maxwell Latshaw completed the top 50 (out of the 407 runners) with a time of 26.46.6. Two spots behind him was first-year William Ruszkowski in 52nd place with a mark of 26:49.0. First-year Caleb Brox was the final point scorer for WashU in 65th place wit a time of 26:56.7.
The Bears will take the next two weeks to prepare for the 2024 UAA Championships on Saturday, Nov. 2. The meet will take place in Providence, R.I. and is being hosted by Brandeis. The men's race gets underway at 11 a.m. ET.
